Indian Alternatives to Milk

An article in the online Hindustan Times, Dislike cow's milk? Try alternatives, gives a great summary of the varieties of non-dairy products available in India.

In addition to commercial products, such as Oatly oat milk, the article also lists various milk alternatives that people can make for themselves including their own oat milk, rice milk, Kokkoh (a rice milk of Thai origin), almond milk, and lupin milk.

One warning: the article also lists goat milk as an alternative. As I've written before (see Goat's Milk for Lactose Intolerants? No.), goat's milk has the same lactose content as cow's milk. It's the different protein composition that allows some people with dairy allergies to drink it.

    Hi Steve,
I have been lactose intolerant since 1975. In the early '80's I discovered a supplement in a health food store that contained lastase and rennet. The store was eventually bought by GNC, General Nutrition Centers. The price practically doubled, but since I cannot produce any enzyme myself, I was willing to pay the price. When Lactaid came out with their capsule I tried it. It did not work 100% so I compared the labels. The missing ingredient was rennet. Now, GNC has changed the recipe and the name of it. It is now called Dairy Digestant. It is in a capsule and claims to be more consentrated. What had been a $7.99 price is now $12.99 and does not have rennet in it. I cannot "stomach" it and can't find any store that has the original product. I feel pretty desperate if not downright infuriated with industries that screw with people who need the product. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks
    Rose

I used to use the lactase pills with rennet in them and they seemed to work better for me, as well. Lactaid Fast Act seems to work better than the regular or Ultra Lactaid, but I have to take obscene amounts of the tablets to eliminate the reaction (uncomfortable and embarrassing gas). I try very hard to just stay away from dairy, but sometimes just have to give in to temptation!

Reply to Rose: I too was very dissapointed to find that GNC seems to have discontinued thier milk digestant. Vitamin world has a very similar product, though slightly more expensive. Available at www.vitaminworld.com if you don't have a location near you.
